I saw the river in a dreamand thought it the body of a woman,a snake, a naga,ferocious and fearsome—but her handsunfolded into the hills,gentle, a tangle of fingers,of water and stone, and Ifollowed her gesture, graceful.Found her face curvedagainst a mountainside and swalloweda drink from the corners of her eyes.She stands at the oceanand makes the noise of waves crashing—I listen.
