I would have sat you down and explained, pouredyou a mug of coffee and placed it onthat aqua-painted table we bought atthe thrift store that winter in Alaskawhen we left a lamp lit all day and night, painted the kitchen walls orange and stackeda pile of rocks from some river in themiddle of it next to the pepper andsalt shakers, our own henge calling back thelight, little earth work balanced daily bycapable hands paying attention. Thestory’s a sweet one though we never went, nor to any place else for that matter, for all matters, and so will keep usin our back yard, staring at the flames inour fire pit as if they’ll take us somewhere.
